Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS)

GE Healthcare, • Aug 31, 2016

Adding an Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) to a Screening Mammography increases cancer detection, according to a study in the American Journal of Roentgenology (June 2016). The study found that ABUS is a more sensitive scan and is better able to detect cancers in women with dense breast tissue.

For these women, the addition of ABUS demonstrated a relative increase in sensitivity of 62 percent. The research suggests that supplemental imaging such as ABUS is recommended for women with dense breasts, even when the mammography indicates no abnormalities.
