Our Diagnostic Medical Sonographers at Mayfair Diagnostics play a vital role in helping patients and physicians gain clarity through advanced ultrasound imaging. What education or credentials are required to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?

To work as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in Alberta, you typically need to complete a 2–4 year accredited diagnostic medical sonography program or a related allied health program followed by specialized ultrasound training. Most employers require certification or registration with organizations such as Sonography Canada or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Many employers also expect credentials such as CRGS (general), CRVS (vascular), or other specialty certifications, along with ongoing continuing education to maintain competency.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers commonly perform exams such as abdominal, obstetric, pelvic, breast, vascular, and musculoskeletal ultrasound. These exams use high-frequency sound waves to produce images of organs, tissues, and blood flow that help physicians diagnose and monitor medical conditions.

Most sonographers in Alberta work full-time clinical schedules averaging about 33–35 hours per week, although hours can vary depending on the clinic or hospital. Some roles may include evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts, especially in larger healthcare settings

Because sonographers operate ultrasound equipment and work directly with patients, the role typically requires in-person work in clinics or hospitals. Remote or hybrid work is generally not possible for scanning duties, although some administrative or educational tasks may occasionally be done remotely.

Sonographers work with advanced ultrasound imaging systems, transducers, and digital imaging software, along with hospital or clinic systems such as PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) and electronic medical record systems to document and review imaging studies. These technologies help capture, store, and share diagnostic images with radiologists and referring physicians.

In Calgary, diagnostic medical sonographers typically earn about $45–$55 per hour, depending on experience and specialization. The average pay is roughly $48–$49 per hour, which equals about $85,000–$100,000 per year.
